Seized.

Hi guys,
Well my 1998 Evinrude 25hp in seized, it was stuck in gear which i have now free'd of in the lower unit but the flywheel will not turn at all. Could this be a gear issue aswell or is it really seized. When i bought it the plugs were rusty and loose so i gather rust has got into the pistons. I have sprayed gt-85 into the cylinders and tileted the engine up.
What else can i do to unseize?

Re: Seized.

what i would do if i was uncertain if it was lower unit seized or powerhead, would be to remove lower unit. If the lower unit functions properly off the engine, and the power head doesn't then you at least have it figured out which one is bad. Then you can move on to "why". i am a lil uncertain if you are saying you now have the lower unit out of gear and turning free, but the engine is still seized, or what. Personally I would remove the lower unit anyhow to assure myself that there wasn't a bound gear or something else holding the engine. If you know for sure it is the engine that is seized, then yeah freeing up the rings/pistons is a good start.
I don't know gt-85, but i must assume it is a penetrating oil as that would be what i would have suggested... personally I use "breakfree" but they are all pretty good.
was the engine running when it seized or did it seize in storage? is this a new engine to you or one you have had for a good while?

Re: Seized.

The lower unit is still of and the flywheel will not turn. I bought the engine last week the owner had it on his boat then ran aground. Prop was damaged and was never cleaned through with fresh water from what i can tell. I have managed to get the shift rod in the lower unit working fine and the engine gear shifter so i believe it is just seized. I will let the gt-85(penetrating oil) soak over night then have another look tommorow. What is the best way to try and unseize it?
Cheers

Re: Seized.

If the powerhead is seized, I would tear it down. All too often, I see motors that were unseized via force, penetrating oil, etc. and then run. Usually doesn't take long before they sound like a coffee can full of BBs... Tear it down, assess it, rebuild it if feasible....

Rob, If the powerhead is seized, then the penetrating oil is not going to do much good. Need to tear down the powerhead and see what went wrong.

That's cool, You can deal with that once you have the powerhead off the outboard.

Re: Seized.

umm why did the bolt holding the cylinder head shear off? And maybe I am simple but that shouldn't seize the motor it should create a leaky head gasket right?.... which might in turn let water into the cylinder and cause it to seize.... umm where else did the water go... did it get into the crank case? Or am I totally misguided here?

Re: Seized.

The snapped bolt is not causng the seize just could prove difficult to remove the cylinder head if required.

Unless you have a lot of practice drilling busted bolts, I would take it to a machine shop to have the bolt removed...unless you get lucky and the bolt broke above the mating surface of the head/block and are able to grip it with vise grips etc. Botching up a head bolt can prove very costly. But this all depends on what you find inside the case...maybe a moot point!

Re: Seized.

Okay guys, today i got the cylinder head of. penetrated oil them througly tried giving them little tap with a block of wood all to no avail. Stripped carb, reeds and then whoa a hell of a lot of salt in the crank,it was rusted and horrbile. So now i have the powerhead off in the garage soaking in gt-85 i think it will need a new crank or do you recon i could save it?
It looks to me like it has been under ye old sea water.
