i bought a 1972 85hp evinrude with no control. can the selectric pushbutton be used with this motor? the harness was cut several feet from the motor, so i have the internal and several feet of the external wiring harness including the black cannon plug.
now, i just bought a selectric unit like the one in the picture, but the cannon plug was cut off of that unit as well, so i dont know if it was yellow or black. (i should be receiving it anyday in the mail.)
sooo. can i splice the remaining black cannon plug wires into the rest of the selectric control harness and make it work? basically, it would be a hybrid wiring harness.

That looks like the correct control unit but your motor should be a hydro electric shift and I am pretty sure the plug should be yellow.

I have that exact same motor, plus a 1970 which is the same. I also have the evinrude manual. Later on today I will try to hook my scanner and send you the wiring schemtic for it.

It might be the right one. Maybe. The control for the electric shift and the hydro-electric look the same. The difference is the shift switch.

On the control you need for your motor there will be no power to either shift wire when in forward. There will be power to one wire when in neutral and power to both when in reverse.

On the control for the electric shift there will be no power to either shift wire when in neutral, power to one in forward and power to the other when in reverse.
