selectric gearbox gears

Hi guys,
I have a question about the hubs inside my gearbox. Upon dismantleing the clutch assemblies, I found I have two different types. One has the drive gear running on needle rollers, and the suface that the clutch spring grabs is machined smooth. The other has a bushing between the gear and the hub, and the surface that the spring grabs is knurled. Which one is better? (drive surface) I can easily replace the bushing with needle rollers, but I need to know which hub is better so that I can use it for the forward gear, and the other for reverse (not planning on going hard in reverse :) ).
Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

Use the knurled hub on the forward gear lark. It's knurled to grip better at high end torque. The needle bearing goes toward the rear, reverse gear. The needle bearing is more for prop shaft support than anything.

Ok will do that, I figured the bearings would go to the rear. Do you think that there is any benefit to putting bearings on the front, or should I leave it with the bushing?

Why was the unit dismantled. I'm curious as to what was the problem with it. I have a few parts (not all) left in my remaining stock for that unit should you require any.

well joe, when I bought the engine, the L/U was already disassembled (as was everything else!), and while cleaning things, I found some crud in the springs, so I figured I should open them up fully to clean the insides properly. Thanks for the offer on parts too, but I found a good dealer near my work who has spare parts in stock for my motor, good prices too. don't know if freight to Australia would be all that cheap for some of these parts, considering the weight of them.

Re: selectric gearbox gears

Ok, Update on my lower unit. My propshaft was unserviceable, all seals were shot, and someone used about a full tube of silicone to seal the shift wiring in place. I finally managed to get an engineering company near my place to machine and sleeve my propshaft(amazing what beer can achieve!). Ihave new bearings throughout the entire L/U and new seals too. I also managed to dig up the plate that goes under the water pump(I had been looking for one in an earlier post). I had an engine reconditioning shop bead blast the cavitation plate and gear case assemblies, both have been etch primed and painted. I am about to reassemble the entire L/U and presure/vacumme test it. One question remains, What is the correct oil I should be putting in, I have seen it said that I should be useing OMC type C or premium blend, is this correct? and if so, is it still available? One marine mech that I spoke to about the gear oil said that I should throw my engine away, then told me that he didn't know anything about my engine because it was before his time. So any help from you old hands will be (as always) very much aprieciated.

I do my own wrenching. And as for the guy at the shop, I don't see him any more. I thought that he might have been able to help, oh well. At least I have you guys :)
