This is a new term for me. How would you describe a self bailing boat. I need to have some examples to think about.

Arlan

When any water enters the cockpit, there should be some scubbers(Drains),so thet the water will return overboard, without the use of the bilge pump.

We used to race an "R" class boat and the principle of the self bailing was as follows. There were two venturi valves in the cockpit floor that would open automatically when the boat passed thru 5 knots speed. Then any water gathered would vent out through the outer hull. When the boat slowed below 5 knots these valves would close.
Today I see another type made with an outer canvas fire hose type material. They work by the hose colapsing when the boat is stopped because of the oputer water pressure, and opening to drain when underway because the outer water pressure has gone and water can flow freely from the cockpit.
Ross

simply put.

imagine your boat deck, imagine yourself sitting in your capt's chair. Imagine all the way in the back on the right and left corners, on the floor. imagine 2 holes on the floor, and imagine another 2 holes on the back side of the bottom of the boat. top hole is connected to the side hole with a water hose.

the top deck hole is little higher than the outter ones so that water cant get in from the outside, GRAVITY !!. if rain, or wash comes in, gravity pushes it out.

"If i have insulted your intelligence, I apologize, it was not intended."

I'm not a guru in at boating, thats why my desription is of a 4th grader.
