Selling my boat - need fast advice!

Hey guys-

I'm selling my bass boat to upgrade it and I've got a guy interested. He wants to buy it today and take it with him and wants me to sign an agreement to give him a refund if his mechanic tests it out and says its no good. I have reservations about this because if they damage the motor, or swap parts out without me knowing (I know that's a stretch) I'd be giving a refund and kinda be stuck holding the bag. Am I being paranoid here or should I stick to my guns that I want to be present for his mechanic testing it on the water and that a sale would be final?

Thanks for the advice.

It's a 1978 bass boat with 1978 70hp Johnson.

I would be present for mechanic's check, get your money & be done. Or sign the agreement as M. Mouse!

Have him send his mechanic over to do the survey while you have the boat in your possession. If it is a great distance, tell him to contact a known reputable mechanic in your area. But don't let the boat go based on those criteria...

Say "NO!".

If he is interested, he gets a mechanic before purchase and/or offer.

That's the cost of being a buyer: Travel, time, research, surveyor, mechanic, phone calls, subscriptions.

You are correct to worry.

I would definately be present during testing and all sales are final. Period.
NO I would not sign anything or give statement for a refund you are not a dealership

That's just not how things get done.
Ya'll need to go to mechanic together... or he buys "as is".
And by "as is" I assume you offered him a ride??
WhY the hurry?

If it were me, I would want to be around when the mechanic was testing it. Otherwise, sale it as is or find someone else to buy it. There are always people looking to buy boats. I do not like conditional sales, it leaves to many options for return. He could take it out first time, tear up the lower unit, bring it back for a refund, and leave you holding a big bill to fix it before you could get rid of it.
Bottom line. If you have any doubts about this sale (i.e. conditional sale), listen to your instinct. Another buyer will be around before you know it. If the buyer doesn't understand where you are coming from, then he is the wrong buyer.

I would be there in person when the mechanic checks it out BEFORE it is even sold. Either the buyer pays for the mechanic, or you guys split it. Agree to the deal up front. No way to selling it and then letting somebody come back and renegotiate things later.
For me, once it's sold it's not my concern anymore. I'm certainly not providing any open ended warranty or wiggle room for anybody to try to get money back.

Thanks a ton.

He decided to come today and bring his mechanic. We'll see what happens.

Thanks again.

Anytime someone is trying to rush you to sell or to buy either one be wary.

Sold. Final sale, as-is.

Using the $ toward a bigger boat. Baby steps...

Thanks for the good advice. I'm glad I didn't let the excitement of a buyer control the sale.

Nicely done! Now that you're in the market ... do you know a good marine surveyor? ;)
