Early last summer, I was engaged in putting together the two greatest days in a boatowner's life at the same time. Bought new boat, sold old one. Buying the new boat was fun and easy, selling the old one a little more complicated.

I took an ad to come out in the Saturday paper and took the new boat out fishing early Sat morning. Got home about noon and had 5 messages, the first one a gal who had called at 5:48 am. Figure she's serious. I called her and said I didn't want to take it out on the nearby lake because it's used by "ocean-going tugs" and PWCS (this was a 14' 52" beam jon), so she agreed to a barrel test. I pulled the boat out of the garage, put a garbage can under it and filled it with water. Pulled the rope and it went "tink!" ('76 6hp Johnson. Probably original rope) Called her back and said she could look at the boat if she wanted but couldn't see the motor run. She really wanted to see the motor run. Smart lady.

Got 4 more calls on saturday and 22 calls on Sunday. Kept track in order that they called.

Dropped the motor off Monday pm and told them might as well tune it and change the lower unit while they were at it. Picked it up Tuesday pm, $69.00 (these guys are fast and cheap), called the lady and told her it was ready to see. She feels strongly that she'd like to see it run on water. Bummer. We agree to meet at a lake close to her but about 40 miles from me. I apologize for not getting around to cleaning it up a little. She says, "this looks great. You wouldn't believe the junk I've looked at." I said yes, I would. I've looked at some of the same stuff.

We get on the water and the bulb is acting like it's shot. Won't pump up. (Less than a year old, so I know a bad bulb.) Finally realise I have the hose on backwards. Don't remember ever taking it off. Turn the hose around, motor starts with a happy purr, all's well that ends well.
