Semi-Synthetic / Full Synthetic

Does anyone have real good input towards running a synthetic blend versus running a full synthetic 2 stroke oil in their outboards?

I was standing at the store today and noticed that the pennzoil premium plus jug said it was NMMA as well TCW3. But the Pennzoil full synthetic only says TCW3 on it.

What about the OMC XD-50? Anyone run that?

I'm looking to run an oil that may not load up and smoke as much as the current oil I premix with. I do a lot of idling from time to time in the busy ICW waterways down here in South Florida. I have been running the West Marine Premium oil. It was around $15 a gallon.

I use the Pennzoil full synthetic tc-w3 and have had no problems. Don't know about the others though. I run mostly older engines though.

The Bombardier XD50 oil is the same as the XD30, except that it has the carbon guard additive already premixed in it. The carbon guard is ideal for preventing carbon buildup on the rings and piston skirts. For those that buy the Bombardier carbon guard and add it to each tankful of gas, the fact that it is premixed in the XD50 maked it a lot easier. The older crossflow engines had more problems with carbon accumulation, so that is all I run in mine.

Holy Cow!! I just went out and checked my jug of Penzoil and sure enough, it doesn't bear the NMMA logo. That means:
1. It wasn't submitted for testing--OR
2. It was submitted and flunked the test--OR
3. It was submitted and passed the test and the jug designer didn't put the logo on the label.

Hopefully, the jug designer doesn't work there anymore. I just went to the NMMA website and "Pennzoil Marine 100% Synthetic Outboard 2-cycle oil TC-W3" is indeed on the list of certified oils.

Whew!! I've been using and promoting it for some time now.

Full synthetics build less carbon, make less smoke and are more friendly to the environment.

Whether those benefits are worth the extra cost is up to you.

What other "full synthetics" are out there that people might run in their Johnson/Evinrudes?

I'm really leaning towards the Pennzoil Full synthetic. I guess it probably couldnt hurt to try and see if it truely smokes less, etc...

Does anyone run any Quicksilver products in their Johnsons? I use the premium gear lube for the lower unit, but have never used any 2 stroke oils made by them.

Re: Semi-Synthetic / Full Synthetic

I've used most of the major and even minor brands of oil, including regular, synthetic blends and full synthetic. One of the blends is sold by Cabelas under their name and I used that for years until it got pricey like the others. A couple winters ago I bought every gallons of Pennzoil semi-synthetic they had for $7.00/gallon. Have had excellent service with it. Don't know whether it's available any more though. The shelves are now stocked with the full synthetic at $12.00/gallon.
