I'm sitting here watching ESPN and they have the strongman thing going on. With a bar attaching two station wagons in the rear, guys are lifting the cars up.
So I have a flashback to my youth...rewind..The Wild World of Sports...does anyone miss that or what? Jim McKay. Howard Cosell. Anywho, I remember seeing athletes power lifting...they hadn't broken 400# at that time. They were straining with blood vessels bulging out of their faces, loosing their balance, etc. Out comes this huge ugly Russian that looks like he stepped out of a James Bond film and pops 500# up and over his head with no problem. He really separated the men from the boys. Can't remember his name though...something like Alexiyu. It's bugging me now. Anyone remember?
And who was the little retired Irish race car driver that sportscast sometimes?

Sorry, I'll turn this thing off and hit the hay now.

Re: Senior Moment

Yup, I was gonna say Jimmy Stewart, but obviously the wrong person.
Good - I'm not alone!

Been googling ever since I posted this.
I found the Russian - Vasily Alekseev
and speaking of Russians - remember seeing Olga Korbut when she was 16?

Haven't come up with the Irish guy yet.

Re: Senior Moment

Just found him...he used to sportscast all the races.
Jackie Stewart.

I didn't know there were that many different types of racing until I searched "Wide World of Sports" and "racing".
You would think auto racing would be closer to the top of the list...wrong.
Hydroplane racing,
Cutter racing,
Dory boat racing,
Ice boat racing,
Power boat racing,
Yacht racing,
Bobsled racing,
BMX racing,
Bicycle racing
Horse racing,
Evel Knievel racing,
Drag racing, - close but no cigar (remember Don Garlitts ?)
LeMans racing - AHA.

Okay I'm happy now, hitting the hay.

Re: Senior Moment

Jackie Stewart - there ya go. Hows about the guy crashing off the ski jump who, by the way, barely got a scratch?
Olga Korbut - Jeeze, we are dirty old men, huh?

Re: Senior Moment

Yup - How about suffering through "Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom" waiting for the "Disney" show? If our kids only knew what it was like when there where only 2 1/2 channels (ABC only came in good when it was raining...)

Re: Senior Moment

Most shows had theme songs. You could "Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale, a tale of a fateful trip".

Re: Senior Moment

it didn't matter if you were in the room with the TV, you heard the theme song, and knew what was on. Don't forget Amos and Andy, Jack Benny and Lucy.

Honeymooners, Bang zoom to the moon Alice to the moon.

My all time favorite, Popeye, the sailor man.

Adrienne Barbeau on Wide World of Sports Celebrity Superstars Competition running the obstacle course!!! Oh baby, hardly even noticed Gabe Kaplan running in the other lane.

Couldn't get enough of hunting shows with Kurt Gowdy either!!

Eclectic tastes I guess....
