Seperating lower unit 15hp 1990 evenrude

I want to replace the impeller on my motor and after i pulled the 6 screws to remove the lower unit the shift linkage was would not come lose. How do i get to the impeller?

Did you put it in forward gear? This should allow the lower unit to drop enough for you to see the gear shift rod coupler between the midsection and lower unit. Remove the bottom screw from the coupler and the lower unit should drop free.

I did that but thought that might be the wrong route. I'll proceed with that way. where will the water pump be? Will there be any issues with the shift linkage length?

The pump will be sitting on top of the lower unit. You'll remove 4 bolts to remove pump , 2 long fore, 2 short aft. Driveshaft goes thru the center of the pump. Slide pump housing up and off of driveshaft, same with impeller. Watch for impeller key between impeller and drive shaft 'flat'.<br /><br />Shouldn't be any issues with length of shift rod, BUT, don't rotate it either. If it gets rotated and not noticed, you'll scratch your head for hours trying to figure out what's wrong when you re-assemble.
