Re: seperating upper stern unit drive from housing

not quite sure what your asking the removal procedure came from the seloc and OMC manual for cobra 5.8. the boat is a 89 bayliner ciera 2755 that was garaged since 1995, the problem is there is no water getting to the engine, i replaced the impeller, forward and reverse works fine, WOT is fine i ran it less than 2 minute went from 160 to 200 degrees pulled the therostat houses minimal water l was very careful not to overheat, there is minimal water coming out, i replaced therostat, removed lower unit and found packed mud in pickup tube, i want to remove upper unit and replace all gaskets and inspect everything when i drained the gear oil it had a nice color, no water, no shavings, no burnt smell. just cannot seperated the upper unit from the housing.

if the drive hasn't been off for a long time, or ever it is possible that the splined shaft is stuck in the coupler due to a lack of maintenence.

sounds like this is a cobra drive??

what works for mercruisers is placing a 2x4 block between the top cap of the upper housing and the gimbal ring, then rotating the drive upwards by hand until the block is wedged between the top cap and the gimbal ring

once the block is wedged, continue rotating upwards and the force against the wedge block will force the drive off

you may have to give it the tony danza (show it who's the boss) to get the drive off ;)

Ah, hammer it off. I hope you've read the manual. You are talking about removing the lower unit, no?

OMC right?

NOT MERCRUISER>

The shift must be turned to the port side to get the unit apart. Read the manual before you hammer it off.
