Hi! Im new at boating and just bought this old boat with this 1970 evinrude Triumph outboard. I think it is 60 hp. Could anyone tell me how I find the Serial # on the engine so I can get parts for it?-----Also do they produce lots of smoke out of the propeller? why??? Thanks for any replies on this!!

Welcome travoy, some motors have through hub exhaust in which case the exhaust would exit at the prop.

You shouldn't be running the motor without having water circulating through it though, Have you got muffs on it?

The model# & serial# can be found on a plate on the transom mounting bracket, it also can be found on a small aluminum freeze plug on the top of the motor, you'll need the model# to find more info about your motor.

Also where in UT. are you? I'm in Roy.

Thanks for the reply mike!Ya I put the muffs on and boy does it smoke. My buddy sold me the boat from a pawn shop in SLC. so I know nothing about this boat. Its in very good condition. But I dont know why it smokes so bad.The exhaust does come out of the hub on this one. and seems to drip oil in the water from the proppeler. Is something wrong with it? Im from St George. And My son and I love to bass fish on Quail Lake. We had a 14' aluminum boat at first. But now we got this old vintage boat. Its date is 1968. The guy who owned it took great care of it! Do you think I need to change some gasket or seal somewhere?? Let me know! Have you ever been on Quail or sand hollow yet??

Well it should smoke some, have you got a service manual for it yet? if not you'll need to get one, also a parts catalog wil help alot. I can give you some links to some places if you're interested!

The oil dripping could just be unburnt fuel or the prop shaft seals could be leaking.

Since you just got the motor and you don't know its maintenance history there are some things you should do such as drain and replace the lower unit fluid, check spark plugs, if their fouled replace them.

First thing is post that model# so there wont be any confusion as to what motor you're working with. It can make a difference!

Well, you got what you bought, 1970 60hp Evinrude.

Your lower unit is an electric shift so you'll need to use Type C/Premium blend gearcase lube. When you change it, if you want to flush it you can use Dexron transmision fluid, use the gear lube for normal use.

Fuel mix is 50:1, 1 pint marine grade TCW 3, 2 cycle oil to 6 gal. 87 octane gas.

You can find the service manual and parts manual at these places.

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/evinrude/
http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/index.cfm?fuseaction=search.main

Located one on Ebay click here.

Hope this helps :)
