Hi there,
My nephew just bought a mid 80's 19 foot bayrunner. It came with a 40 horse Mariner electric start engine. The numbers are 6E9 L 412030.
I'm trying to locate the information that will tell me who made this engine (Yamaha?) the year built, the model number, etc. I've been searching around but having trouble. Can anyone direct me somewhere or answer these questions.
Thanks-Gary

i looked around and am guessing you have the 1986 Yamaha built (for Merc) "C" model Mariner

Thanks for looking. Does the L mean long shaft? Why is this so hard to nail down?

Re: serial number help mariner 40

Here's some information I've collected so far but still can't verify that it's accurate.

1) 1986 "c" model built by Yamaha for Mariner
2) model 6E9 the E means manual tilt w/electric start
3) L means 20" shaft
4) might be model 40 ELO Don't know what the O means

I still don't know what the 6 and the 9 means in 6E9

this may help..but in the pdf it states that 1984-1986 models had variations in the code which contain NO model number information...

it could be D?? if thats the case the motor date changes to a 1990..i imagine it could be an 89-90 vintage but not certain..

the pdf i sent you has the label as shown do you have that same label?

i would double check..i have not seen O anywhere in any documentation i read so far

Re: serial number help mariner 40

It is a 1980, 30hp electric start engine. Yamaha built for Mariner. The 'L' does mean long shaft. The '6E9' is just Yamaha's series numbering system. It doesn't mean anything as far as the engine goes.

The 30 and the 40 have the same cowls so someone may have put 40hp decals on it. The number you supplied is definitely a 30.

The only thing correct is #3.

Your engine is not an ELO, the O stands for oil injection, which your engine never had. This numbering/lettering system is only used by Mercury for Mercury built Mercury and Mariner engines, not Yamaha built engines.

The '6E9' is just a series numbering system used by Yamaha.
