Hi All.

I may have asked this before with no success in finding it. I'm looking for the serial number on my outboard. It's been repainted on its transom and there is no sign of the original plate. I understand I can find this on the engine? Just I don't know where or what I'm looking for.

Any help would be great :)

It is supposed to be on the center of the transom bracket. If not there, look on the block, near the transfer covers and seam of the crankcase+cover.
There also may be a welch plug with the number on it. Last choice is to match the part number of the block.

Look on the right side ,standing behind the prop, down on the side of the lower mid section on a tag.

The serial # should be on the tilt tube, between the thumb screws. Look from inside the boat, looking at the engines face plate where it says "Mercury". Then look down till you see where the steering arm and and steering link connect. If you turn the engine either way from straight, it's under the arm/link connection on the tilt tube. Here is a picture of an older engine, but the serial # is in the same place as yours is.

Hope this helps.

Im so confuse! TODAY I went to a Bass Pro store close to me (Mercury dealers and Technicians) and 2 of their techs told me that the number in the tilt tube IS NOT the serial number of the motor. Mine is 5552504. They said that Mercury serial numbers have letters too, not just numbers. Well, i can't find any info online using my serial number (from the tilt tube) and the techs that are suppose to know about this says that this is not the serial number, i guess i will never know the serial number of my 140 hp.

they said that the number should be in the middle of the motor...

Hi there, welcome to iboats.

Well your first mistake was going to Bass Pro for tech advice on an older engine...:D Also just for future reference, it's preferred that any topics older than 90 days remain an archive and it's best to go ahead and start a new topic of your own and if needed just reference the archived topic in your new topic by posting a link to it. Thanks, iboats Mod team.

Your engine serial number 5552504 is shown in the look up chart to be a 1979 engine model.
