Serial number madness

I have 2 mercury 40hp outboars. One is supposedly a 1979, and the other a 1980. the serial number than is engraved on a plate on the 1979 reads 5253808. the serial on the 1980 on a plate riveted to the transom mount reads 5661617. I have talked to the service/parts chat people on boats.net, and when they search my serial number, they tell me the numbers are nonexistent. can anyone tell me what year my motors are, and if they are canadian, or some international model? thanks to whoever can help.

Are these motors Canadian or international? If you type the serial number in at the Mercury parts website, they say the numbers are invalid.

YOU might have to put a 0. in front as in 05174089

The both look like they're US made. You might try putting an 0 in front of the number as Mi duckdown suggests.

Ive tried putting a 0 in front of both of them on the Mercury website and still nothing came up. My local Mercury dealer said they didn't register in his computer either, yet I have searched part numbers off the motos, like fuel pumps, and pulled them up using the part number. which is strange. I would think an entire parts list would be available for the serial number if multiple parts off the motors can be found searching part numbers.

The Crowley site lists these models of 40 hp for 1979 which includes your s/n 5253808:

For 1981, they only list a 7.5 model and one TH thruster unit.

Gerry
