Serial number overlaps? Is it 1150 or 1250?

The serial number on our Merc falls into different HP's and different years on two different websites. We have no idea which is right.

Serial number 2837868

This number comes up under the 1969 Merc 1250 and 1970 Merc 1150.

I cannot find a model number anywhere and the cover says Merc 1000 BP.

Any help for this poor, confused soul is appreciated.

Re: Serial number overlaps? Is it 1150 or 1250?

The 1968 and 69 silverblocks (non BP) 1000s had "tiger" and 1250s had a "typhoon" casting name on the blocks.

The 1970 1150 did not have any casting name and was a totally different block then the 1968-69 1250s were.

The (non BP) 1968 and 69 1000 was based on a 89.x cubic inch block and had a shorter metal wrap then the 1968 and 1969 1250 and the which were based on the larger (and a bit taller) 99.x cubic inch block.

The 1970 1150 would have been a taller (unamed) 99.x cubic inch silver block too.

The 1000 BP was a race engine, (the pics you show do not have the racing lower unit that the engine came with). "Scream and Fly" posters state the 1968 1000 BP was a "typhoon" and the 1969 "SuperBP" 1000 was unamed like the 1970 silver blocks were, but I have never had one so I'm not sure this is the correct info.

You are going to need to find out which specific carbs are on the engine to narrow down the mistery. The non BP 1000s and the 1250s and the 1150 all have different carbs which should help you solve your mistery.

I am not sure about the BP's carbs but that information is also available if you search.

Hope this info helps you. JR

Thanks so much!

Our block says "tiger" so that helps narrow it down alot. We just finished working on the carbs and are getting ready to (hopefully) give it a test run. I just locked up the cover so I will have to check on that carb part number.

I thought it was strange that the serial number didn't correspond to the 100o. We didn't think it was a BP (because of the LU) but a girl can always dream!

I'd like to say also that this forum is incredible! We have learned so much and appreciate all the useful information. :)
