I have a 1978 260-350 I believe. Theres no serial # any where on the engine to confirm what yr. it really is. It is a 350 Gm. I confirmed that. It looks to be a rebuilt motor, an not original. My sterndrive has a serial # stamped on the starboard side of the upper gear housing # 2729711. I had the stern drive rebuilt, an I was told it was a Merc MR 1:50 ratio. Can this be? I can't match this serial # up with any Sterndrive charts that I 've looked at. No, the casing was not replaced at the rebuild. Is it possible this sterndrive was converted to a 1:50 ratio drive, in a old casting? Boy do i have alot to learn.

Re: Serial numbers don't match

Ayuh,...

Being a 1978,... I'm not at All surprised it's not original...

The transom assembley is probably still the Mod.1,... Alphas,+ the MRs are a plug,+ play swap....

The 1.50:1 is what's Supposed to be behind a V8...

Ditto on the motor,.. Other than a few design changes over the years,...
An SBC is still an SBC...

Ayuh,....

The Alpha drives are the typical Chevy sedans of outdrives...

The TR/ TRSs are like a Bulldozer,... They're Monsterous drives,.. You Don't have 1...
