Re: SERIAL NUMBERS

Suppose it can be changed
But each year has some subtle changes, that you can verify irrespective of the S/N.
You can even change the transom bracket and cowling cover of the 80's Mercs, but different years had new components introduced, so it's very hard to totally falsify the year.

Re: SERIAL NUMBERS

What the problem is, I recently up graded from a 2003 60 hp to a 2003 90 hp. The dealer told me it was a brand new out of the crate motor! Upon picking up the boat with the new motor on it I notice that the cowl had a white powder all in the air intake vents and the top of the cowl had over spray on it, almost like it was sitting around in a body shop!!Also the dealer wasn't to worried about double oiling this new motor!! I'm wondering if this is a demo or a problem motor? Also the serial # sticker looks like it's been replaced? Is thier any other #'s on the motor?

Re: SERIAL NUMBERS

Look on the "freeze plugs" (welch plugs to some people) On the block. The serial numbers are usually stamped on them.
