1437751714.jpg Hello. i have bought a mariner outboard last year.
and the plate on the engine trim/tilt is gone.
only thing that is on the engine is the freeze plugg. and the serial is scraped off. so my worries is that this engine has been stolen some time.
is there a way to find the serial number or what year this engine is. need it to order parts.
any ideas what year this engine is? it has Electric start, power trim, long shaft, (EPLTO) i think

If you can't read the complete serial number on the welsh plug, can you read any of it? The first 3 or 4 numbers is really all you need to ID the year.

Another place that may have the year is on the starter, Mercury did stamp the starter with a manufacturing date. I don't know if Mariner did the same or if all Merc starters were stamped.

One more place is see if the motor has a final inspection sign-off sticker or stamp - These often have a date as well.

Depending when the starter was made, it could be a 1995 motor. But '94 or '95 is a good stating point.

Based on the way that number is scraped off, I would bet that motor at one time or another was stolen, it is a classic wipe the number out pattern. That said, with the correct type of acid, you can actually pull the number off the motor to identify what year it is. The way the number is damaged is a classic for a stolen motor.
