Recently purchased used Crestliner with 50 HP Johnson (1980s). Did two sea tests and the motor ran great and fired up quickly both times. Seller seemed like an honest guy. I asked him whether he thought I should have the motor serviced and he said it should be in good shape and that he probably wouldn't do anything until end of summer. While the motor seems to run fine, since I have no history with the boat, would you advise taking it for service and if so, what would you ask to have done? And, how much should I expect to spend?
BTW, this boat is used primarily in saltwater.
THANKS!

Re: Servicing Engine

Unless he can tell you with certainty what was done and when I'd go ahead and have it serviced, especially since it's been run in salt water. Water pump, fresh lower unit oil, that kind of thing. If the condition of the motor is as good as you think it shouldn't cost too much. If nothing else you'll have peace of mind. Also, do some poking around in the Johnnyrude section to get a feel for that motor and to get more info regarding what you should do.
