The tach on my 1980 115 johnson is sticking occasionally. If you tap it, it will register the RPM fine for a while, but ultimately sticks again.

Can you service Tachs by adding some lube some where?

Stephen

Re: Servicing Tach

Hi Stephen,

Try looking for a poor or loose electic connection. I think OMC always used a grey wire for the tach feed. If it's loose it could be giving the on/off type reading you describe. Because it starts working when you tap it, check the wire connections on the back side of the tach first. A poor ground connection can have the same affect.

Tachs are not serviceable. When they go, they go.

The good news is that quality tachs are available starting at around $70 and up to $300. And they are really easy to install if you have easy access to the rear of the dash panel.

Lots and lots to choose from at the Marine Mega Mall.

Good luck,

Mark
