Looks like my carrier seal is bad and needs to be replaced. I watched achris video and one other. Chris makes mention of splitting the bearings before settling the preload. The other doesn't but the other does mention timing marks in the upper inspection area that needs to be lined up. I know nothing about this, but learning what I can. If I have to split the bearings can I do it with typical automotive tools. Or do I need to take it in to the shop.

Splitting the bearings is to relieve any preload on them, and can be done with a gentle tap with a soft face mallet. It's mentioned in the book (Merc genuine manual). The timing marks are only on the 1.65:1 ratio gears and only for Alpha One drives, doesn't apply to Gen II. And only used on reassembling the gears in the housing, nothing to do with setting the preload. Can you link the other video and I'll have a look at it.

Here it is. Turns out it is for a Bravo, my bad. So, splitting the bearings sounds like an easy task. I guess a dial indicator type torque wrench is required? There expensive, I wonder if I can rent one.

So, achris I decided to get some help rather than buy the tools, I got to talking to a local shop, the mechanic has great ratings and does a lot of High Performance stuff. He's willing to help me out with my drive this weekend, however, when I mentioned setting the preload he said that it's not really necessary as long as you get everything back to where it was. Remember, that I know nothing about boats, so, my question is. Is there some truth to his statement, and if he as all this experience, can he do it by feel? Should I take his word for it? Or, should I turn away and run?????? He's doing me a favor price wise.

Thanks again
