can anyone explain to me how to properly set an electrical choke on this motor,or how to properly adjust it,it started fine, when ever i tried, but the last time it sputtered and backfired, and never started again,it cranks right over like it supposed to but wont start, checked plugs and they fire, well the top one does,i havent checked the other 2,so had a friend come over, and we decided to try to move the choke manually,he did something and it started, but i dont have a lock on the stand and the motor jerked, and stalled, now it wont start again, any suggestions, choke problem or is it more serious? any help would be greatly appreciated, thx.

Re: setting choke on an 1985 85hp force

When cold these engines tend to be fussy starters unless you follow procedure. The controls must be put in fast idle. To do this, you pull out the silver knob (or press in the rubber button, OR pull out the whole handle--depending upon control) and advance the handle as far as it will go. Then you push in the key and hold it in while turning to start. This chokes the engine. You should hear the choke click closed.

The rod connecting the choke butterflies should be set when open. All must be equal. The solenoid must be set so that it fully pulls in the steel slug and all three choke butterflies must close fully.

Sometimes the gaskets between the airbox and carbs swell and the choke levers will stick. If this happens either trim the gaskets or slightly bend the levers so they move freely.
