Hi again all!

Time to get cracking on my engine project.. This winter I had ordered a rebuilt 350. The numbers indicate its a 1978.. It also came with a new HEI electronic ignition.. I need to set the timing and install the hei.... How exactly do I go about this (I am only a small engine backyard mechanic)... I am assuming the #1 piston would need to be a T.D.C... what else do I need to know.

Thanks

Re: Setting initial timing

HEI doesn't really mean much. Several different distributors have been called HEI. Post a picture of what you have.

Re: Setting initial timing

yes it needs to be on TDC that is right after the intake valve closes before the exhaust valve opens. TDC is the firing position. Next what i would do is prime the oil pump and engine with oil. i would use an old distrubitor shaft without the cam gear installed on a drill spin the oil pump shaft until i see oil coming out of the rocker arms. You can even put a mech oil pressure gauge on the oil portto see the pressure build. (this also primes the lifters so you can set the valve lash easier. now you install the distributor and have the rotor pointed towards the no 1 cylinder you may have to turn the oil pump shaft so it aligns with the dist when it goes down.

HEI is an automotive term! Post a pic, please.
