Hi There,

I was wondering if someone could help me verify that I have set the timing correctly on the following engine:

1964 110 GM 135cu.in. Inline 4 Cylinder

It's my understanding that to set the timing the following procedure should be followed:
  1. Turn the engine untill the timming marks on the front pulley are nearly aligned.
  2. The rotor button in the distributor should be pointing at the Cylinder1 or Cylinder4 plug wire depending on which cylinder is ready to fire.
  3. If the valve cover is off and both valves on Cylinder1 are closed the rotor button should be pointing at Cylinder1. If one valve is closing and the other is opening at Cylinder1, then Cylinder4 is ready to fire and the rotor should point to the Cylinder4 wire.

Hopefully I have it right and I'm not missing anything. If not, please help me out.

Thanks in advance!

If you mean aligned with the zero on the tab on the timing cover.....and the cam is in right, yep, that should get it started. A timing light will be needed beyond that obviously.

To find out which cylinder is ready to fire, just put your finger over the #1 plug hole and bump it over. When you feel compression building on that cylinder, it is comming into firing postion.
