Setting the timing on a 3.0L - Please Advise!

I have a '98 3.0L. According to the shop that rebuilt it, setting timing on the thing is not straightforward. I put a timing light on it, and I could not see the timing mark at all, which seems to support what he said. I would appreciate any insight into how I can do this. - Thanks
