setting timming , cant get to wot

I went to set the timing on my 1989 90hp crossflow today with a test wheel and was unable to get to 5800 rpms. The max it would go was to 5K. The test wheel does not have the same model number that was recommend by omc for my motor, but i was told that it would work the same. Im not sure if it was because motor was too deep in the water or if its just normal.<br />I set the timming to 28degrees( it was around 32 before adjustment-powerhead rebuilt 20hrs), at full trottle (5k test wheel). My question is it okay the way i did the adjustment? also will the timing change when it gets to 5800k or will it stay the same since i did it at full throttle?<br /><br />Thanks<br />dave

I'm no expert Dave but I believe you did good enough. I have the same motor and I've read most of the threads on this subject. I tried setting mine at the ramp and I couldn't get mine to rev to even 5K in gear. I was told that I should've pulled up some. <br /><br />I set mine by the Joe Reeves method basically. I connected my plug wires to my grounded "test plugs", I set my controls to fast idle and verified W.O.T. and full timing advance. (You may have to manipulate your cables to do this if your controls are another type.) I marked 24 degrees on the flywheel (4 degrees is gained at actual W.O.T.) I then had my wife spin the starter in six or so ten second intervals until I got it dialed in. You could try this and compare your results.
