I have a '65 Johnson super seahorse (60hp) which wasn't setup correctly when I got it. I found out how to setup the low and high mixture settings on the carb, but it was obvious that the ignition/throttle wasn't setup correctly since it wouldn't idle high, it sputtered mid-throttle, and would often die at low idle. At WOT it hesitates for a few seconds, then takes off and runs great.
I fooled with the linkages a bit and it's setup better (at least I have a low idle and can idle it up a bit, as well as give it some power in reverse), but I was wondering how to correctly setup this up. What angle does the magneto unit lie at lowest idle? At what point in the throttle travel does it line up straight with the motor? And when should it start advancing (at what point in the throttle travel?).
From what I see, there are three adjustments:
1. the throttle linkage, which controls how much the throttle lever spins the control arm
2. the linkage from the connecting arm (from the control arm) to the throttle control on the carb
3. The linkage from the control arm to the magneto.
Are there manufacturer's standards as to how these should be setup initially?
Thanks for any help!
