I bought a new Mallory YLM512CV breakerless distributor to go on my newly rebuilt '74 Ford 302. It is a mechanical advance distributor. My old on with points was looking a little tired.

Using a drill to drive the oil pump I turned it until I found pressure on the drill to indicate the oil pump was working and the engine is getting oil. Then I found TDC. On the valve cover it says to set 10 degrees TDC at an idle of 600 rpm. It also says 94 minimum octane which is impossible to find. I wonder if a lower octane, say 90 will take a different advance.

It has been years since I have done this and it was on a points type distributor. My task is to find the number one position close enough to get the engine running until the timing light will show advance. Breakerless are a little harder to find. With points it is easy but he breakerless doesn't look so simple. Any ideas on this one?
