setting valves lash inline 4

doing my valve lash on my in line merc/ gm1983 2.5 4 cyl and don't have the manifold off so I need to know the valve layout from the front of motor to the back=Intake-exhaust order E II EE II E does that look right and
then to adjust them i found online to bring piston one to TDC and then adjust intake 1,2,4, then adjust exhaust 1,3 then rotate till piston 4 is up and adjust intake 3 and exhaust 2&4 this may be a stupid ? but how did i tell which number is which would it be piston one would be intake one and exhaust 1 then piston two would be 2 &2 or am i wrong i am so lost
