Ok so first my engine is a 97 3.0GSMLKD and I purchased a new carb it is a holley 2bbl and It has a dead spot in it but I'm thinking it has st to do with the timing because if you advance the timing while at around 1100rpms the engine runs excellent at cruising Speer and wot but if you, return to,idle it runs like crap but when you return timing to 0 it idles fine but when accelerating it pings, knocks and has a dead spot when accelerating. I'm thinking that whatever advances the timing is not working.. How does the timing advance on this engine? Note that my timing specs are done by ear my timing light got run over and I have not replaced it yet ha.

Second question I can not find a FACTORY service manual anywhere. There is not a volvo penta dealer within 200 miles from here does anyone know where I can find one? Is clymer or seloc equilivant?

Also when I uncovered my boat this year I noticed the oil was a little milky we'll I drained the oil and there was NOT ANY WATER that come out first. So I changed it and I ran it about 2 hours yesterday and the water did not return so my question is can this happen from it being in this southern climate all winter without being run? When I winterized it I filled the block with a 50/50 antifreeze and DCA4 corrosion inhibitor mix so I KNOW it didn't freeze? But looking at the edges of the head gasket it looks pretty rough (this boat use to run in salt water). Are the head gaskets on this 3.0 engine bad about going bad? It has a brand new intake/exhaust manifold.

Thanks in advance for the help you guys on here are my only means of troubleshooting the only boat shop around here... We'll lets just say they specialize in..........drinking beer and smoking dope... Ha

I have one more question the only way you can get ethanol free gas around her is 87 octane. Would it be better to use 93 octane with 10% ethanol and use a ethanol treatment or is it better to stick with ethanol free gas?

Re: Several questions...........

Best to use fuel with the octane rating from the owner's manual. I bet if you look up what your engine needs it will be 87 octane as rated by US method of R+M/2. I lean towards using ethanol-free for the boat, have to go 30 miles one way to get it.

Inside the distributor there usually is weights, & springs, under the breaker plate that make the rotor advance what it needs to be from it's stationary position. Often they get rust or corrosion on them, and must be cleaned & lubed. Unless you have electronic ignition, I am not sure what type of advance system they use on that? Take a look, anyway.

Re: Several questions...........

I have electronic ignition it's not vacuum advance but I did figure out that that is working I got a timing light and shunt the distributor and timed it it is advancing just like its suppose to. It just runs rough when it's NOT under a load like with the water muffs. And it's also running rough idling but I wonder if it could be the fuel I mean it has been sitting there all winter. I did use marvel mystery oil but that's it.
It says use 93 octane fuel and there is no way to get 93 octane without ethanol. On the volvo penta website it says 10% ethanol is ok esp with a plastic tank and that's what I have it just recommend not letting it sit for over 2'weeks without using stabil fuel treatment.
Also I put 15lbs pressure in the water system and THANK GOD no leaks... I just can't figure out the miss I'm gonna try fresh fuel this week and see what happens...

Re: Several questions...........

What about using 87 gasoline and adding a octane booster? Has anyone ever found any that did good? I've never used the stuff.
