Yesterday, shortly befor 1900hrs, my partner and I were standing under the ambulance bay overhang at the Emergency Room where we work. The two of us and another medic were watching the giant raindrops falling straight down, pounding the asphalt. At this time, there was zero wind.
It was as though someone flicked a switch, and all of the sudden, this super heavy rain was nothing more than a light mist falling. After about a minute of this, a single, almost dime sized piece of hail hit the ground a few feet in front of us. Another one fell several feet from the first a few seconds later. A few more here and ther for the next minute or so... And then it was as though the sky opened up. In 2-3 seconds, the ground was covered in little chunks of ice. This lasted for less than two minutes. When it was over, there was nearly an inch of almost dime sized hail on the ground.
I wish I'd had the presence of mind to get this on video with my cell phone. The three of us were just watching this.
My partner and I were about to transport a two year old patient to another hospital at the opposite end of the state(SW to NE). We take patients to this hospital all the time. It's generally a 3 1/2 hour ride (emergency traffic) doing 80-85MPH.
We left with the patient almost an hour later, and it was foggy. We went through heavy fog to pounding rain and back to fog the whole way. The trip took us over five hours. Coming back, it was almost the same, only less rain and more fog. The trip back was slower. This was the first time I'd ever seen fog from one end of a state to the other.
Anyway, here's a link to our local news station. Unfortunately, there are only a few pictures, and they're not very good. http://www.walb.com/story/16571465/severe-weather
