I want to fix some loose and Brocken threads on my boat existing upholstery. My question is would a singer 239 model work on vinyl?

You should be ok. Just use a jeans needle and outdoor thread.

I'm sure it will. If it were me though I would get the outdoor stuff. I don't know how the other stuff would hold up to the sun.

Polyester is the outdoor stuff.

Make sure you use the biggest needle that will fit the machine along with the thickest thread the machine can accept. Also set your stitch length to the longest it can do. Longer stitch = less holes.

Thank you all for the help. I was able to pick up the singer 239 this week. Disassembled cleaned it and oiled it. It I'd very clean and barely used. image.jpg

Re: Sewing Machine Question Singer 239

I've been using a 120 needle with #92 polyester thread in a 80's vintage Singer 2100 home machine,,,, and it works. Doesn't work great, but good enough until I can scrouge up enough $$$ for a good machine. I pick up 1# spools of polyester thread at the upholstery supply shop and wind smaller spools (and bobbins) for the home machine.

Re: Sewing Machine Question Singer 239

You're only issue would be if you were trying to resew the areas with welting (cording). That home machine isn't a walking foot and doesn't have a welting foot attachment. It should work on the flat seams though.
