I just wanted to share a little story about a good friend of mine. He bought a 80 something model fiberglass boat last fall that needed a new transom, deck and stringers. He asked me if I knew anyone who could fix it. I didn't know anyone personally, but I remembered seeing an advertisement in craigslist from a guy in Antlers, OK who did that type of work. I usually wouldn't refer someone just some guy on craigslist, but this guy actually had a little website with pictures of his work and a nice little bio stating that he was retired from the Navy, if i recall right, and has worked on and around boats for years. The guy seems legit right. So I gave my friend his number and said I don't know anything about this guy but seems like he's on the level. So he takes the boat to the guy and has the transom, deck, and stringers replaced for $2400. When he got it back, it looked pretty good, but when he got to the house, he realized that the repair man had swapped the brand new battery that was in it with an old piece on crap battery. Not a big deal. Called the guy up and he said he made a mistake and would pay for a new battery. My friend called several times about getting some money, and the guy always had some lame excuse, like it musta got lost in the mail, or he forgot, and sometimes said the money is on it's way. By the way I forgot to mention that the repair man lives 2.5 hours away. My friend finally just gave up and was going to just forget about it. Then, while cleaning the boat up one day, he noticed that the repair man had run one of the deck screws through the bottom of the hull and had grinded the screw down flush with the hull so he wouldn't notice. Then he got to looking around more closely and noticed that there were screws through the hull all over the bottom of the boat. This dude grinded down all these screws so he wouldn't notice, swapped batteries, collected his $2400 dollars and sent my friend down the road. Now he won't even answer my friends phone calls. This is outrageous! I just can't believe someone would do that to another person. I know it happens everyday, but it sure sucks. Anyway, just wanted to tell the story. Pardon the lengthy post.

P.S. Don't get your boat repaired by the guy in Antlers, Oklahoma!

Wow that's horrible.

Having a glass boat restored is pretty much a DIY or don't do it kinda thing it seems.

Things like this cause me to lose faith in humanity...this guy needs to get his due. Tell your friend to file a small claims court case if he knows an attorney.

I'd imagine karma is gonna be a real B*&$% for this clown at some point in the future.

wow, that sucks. There are good people out there, but it seems you have to sort through a lot of weeds these days to find a flower..

Re: Shady Dealing

You mean the 4" lag bolts to hold the deck on aren't suppose to go through the bottom of the boat? Oh crap......better bust out the silicone!

Crazy huh. I told him he ought to seek some kind of legal council. He said he would really like to stick it to this guy, but he also just wants to get his family on the lake. If he took legal action, I'm guessing it would take quite a while to get anything done, then summer would be gone before you know it. I say if he's not going to take legal action, we could at least gather up the iboaters in Oklahoma, NE Texas, and SW Arkansas, and go whoop this guys butt.

Hope he paid the rip-off artist in confederate $$. i would drive the 2.5 hours to Antlers and get at least a 50% refund with a bat or tire iron.
