Shaft lenght

How important is shaft lenght? I want to put a 20" shaft on a 14' boat that has a 15" transom. I use the 20" as a kicker on my bigger boat and don't want to buy another motor for the 14 unless it is really necessary. How much power/effeciency do I lose using a longer shaft?

it will not perform properly and will probably cause splash back over the transom. you need either a jackplate or a transom elevator, for it to work properly. you can either buy one of build one,
