Shaft Length Conversion

Am I nuts to consider this? I have a 20 inch shaft merc 150 and have an oppurtunity to buy a 225 merc 25 inch shaft. How much work and parts are involved to change it to a 20 inch shaft, or is there something I could do with a jackplate? If I went the jackplate route, I wouldn't need one that moved up and down?..Any suggestions?..thanx John
