Shaft length, is it in the model #?

Can I tell the shaft length of an outboard from the model #? Would an Evinrude E70TLEND be standard shaft length? And would standard be about 18" from top of transom to anti-vent plate? In the world of 70hp motors what is short, long, and extra long shaft?

It seems nobody speaks the same lenguage when it comes to the length of a motor and I don't want to end up with the wrong one! Thanks.

The model number says it is.
E -Evinrude
70 - 70hp
T - Tilt & trim
L - Longshaft (20").
EN - '92
D -meaningless model run code.

But best to measure:
http://www.iboats.com/ref/shaft_length.html
Note the measure is between the bottom of the mounting bracket not the transom, since a transom to AV plate measurement would vary with the mounting hight of the engine.

You have a long shaft motor. ...The "L" indicates and long shaft....

Thanks a lot! Does this motor come in a short, 15" shaft?? Would the common length be 20" like for say a bassboat? I found this chart which seems to indicate the 20" shaft is the short one, but they call it long (can't make it easy) or is the short shaft 15" a specialty race type motor?

I'm guessing most inland boats are running 20" shafts, I'm going to measure up my transom right now, the boat, a Javelin, is new to me.

OK here goes: The hull has a built in setback of 7". The transom is 17" high at the setback where the motor attaches and an additional 3" of height under the setback where the running surface ends. I assume the 20" shaft is for me and that I can mount the motor up a hole or two if I need to run it higher or if the setback allows me to. Sound pretty good?? Also, the motor that's on it now is a J40TLENJ so I guess it's pretty obvious that the 70 is a good swap in. Thanks guys.

Re: Shaft length, is it in the model #?

The trick with the code is that there is no shortshaft letter code. That is to say:
E70TEND would be a short shaft 15" motor
E70TLEND would be a long shaft 20" motor and
E70TXEND would be a extra long shaft 25" motor.

The distance should be between the bottom of the hull (the running surface) and the top of the transom. 17 + 3 = 20" so it's set for a longshaft engine. The setback changes the centre of rotation & gravity as well as allows you to raise the engine up slightly.
