It often has an L in the model # if it is a longshaft. What is the model #?

Get the model# and post it. Maybe we can help you out as to the length.

Re: shaft length on a 9.9hp

Up to about 1970, Johnson Model numbers were two or three letters and a two digit number. Prior to 1960 the RD seriers were based on a 40.5 cu-in. block. After 1960 the RD series were based on a 43.9 cu-in. block. The RX series were based on a 35.7cu-in. block, and so forth. Though the number usually identifies the year of production of that model, it is not a calendar year code. After 1970 model numbers include the HP, as in J33ELUTa. J=Johnson 33=HP E=electric start L=long (20") shaft UT=year code (see below) a=production run [After 1980] the year code uses the letters of the word, "INTRODUCES" to represent the digits 1-0. So the UT would be 73. I N T R O D U C E S 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0"

If memory serves me right "introduces" wasn't used until about 1980 or so. Prior to that the model # codes were different.

Yeah sorry the post is a little confusing. It was in 1980 when they switched to introduces. Here is an example of a 1974 9.9

10E74 is electric start 1974, 9.9 10EL74 is electric 9,9 longshaft 1974
10R74-10RL74 These would be rope start

What you have is a Canadian made Johnson, 9.9 HP., Rope start, 1990, No mention of a long shaft in your model number. Best of luck. Rick.

Hey man check it out. C is canadian, J is johnson 10 is the hp, r is rope start, e translates to 9 and s translates to 0 on that "INTRODUCES" chart, which means 1990, as Rick said. They never put an s for shortshaft, because it is standard in these motors. If it were a longshaft it would have an L in it. You can buy a longshaft conversion kit for this motor for $150. If you want the site P.M. me and Ill get it for ya!

Thanks, would like the reference. Also found an 15r76a 1976 model, so that would be a short shaft too ?
