I need some useful advice...I have a S-14 Lund with a 20" transom. I have a great running 25hp tiller Evinrude that I don't want to part with. The shaft length is 18"...Too short for the boat...If I buy a 5" extension for the motor it will be a few inches too long. Should I extend the shaft or has anyone lowered a tiller steer outboard a few inches with a transom bracket. I will not cut my transom down. I am not crazy about extending the shaft AND buying a jack plate to raise it back up.

Buy the extension.

Your engine is nominally a short shaft (15"). That's the approx distance from the anticav plate to the top of the mounting bracket. The actual value varies somewhat but a short shaft motor is meant for a short transom and a long for a long...

We ran 25 hp long shafts on 20" S-14's and S-16's for years. And shorts on 15-inchers.
