Not sure if this is the place to post this question . Would like to get my boat in the h2o and need some help in trolling motor shaft length for my boat . Just in case the Johnson quits on me and would like to get back home safely! Is a 52 inch 55# thrust most ok for this boat?

Planning on a bow or transom mounted TM? For the transom, 42" or maybe a 36" would work. An SS has a 20" transom and a 36 incher might be harder to operate with the tiller banging the main motor. 42" would be better and 52" is too high when the TM is dropped in the water.

You need to float the boat, measure from the mounting point on the boat to the water line and then add one foot. That gives you the shaft length required.

I'm going to suggest the Minnkota website cuz that's what I'm familiar with. Even if you don't by a Minkota they have all the sizing information there.

You'll need a couple measurements from your boat and the rough weight of it. Plug that info into their sizing guide and you should have your answer.

You don't say what kind of boat you have but I am running 41'' shaft on a 16 aluminum boat that ride pretty high.

Doesn't blow out or suck air and I don't; have it all the way down even..

I believe it was originally 52'' and I cut it down, super easy to do so when in doubt go a alittle long.

Ideally you get the boat in the water and actually measure the distance from the deck to the water and add at least 24''.

Like I said, you can cut it down if it is too long but you can't add.

I put a 6hp Johnson right beside my 60hp etec on my ss160.Just enough clearance that they don't interfere with each other.
