Shaft length

I am buying a 7-10 hp motor for my 12' jon boat. The transom is about 17". Should I go with a short or long shaft?

The flat cavitation plate above the prop should be fairly in line with the bottom of the boat. A 15" short shaft will be 2" too short, a 20" long shaft 3" too long. With the long shaft you could shorten it at the transom if necessary.
