i have a 67 v-145b gladston boat...hull depth is 32" how far down is the prop suposed to be below the boat...it seems to shoot water out the back until it planes...is there any mods i can to to stop this from happening...????i see some motors have a v looking wing on the botom of the shaft just above the prop what is that for...or will that help my problem cause my motor doen not have that...thanks to all that help me.....the ripper :) :p

Measure the transom height on centerline of the keel. This will determine what length motor you will need to start. Your fine tuning of your X dimension will then depend upon prop style, prop cup and setback among other things. A good rule of thumb on your boat is that the "cavitation" plate will be even to 2" above the bottom. Usually those fins work better on top of or above the water when running on plane. Some of them will actually pull the back of the boat down if the motor is mounted too low.<br /><br />Good luck!
