I have a 1979 28ft. Carver mariner with 220 crusaders. The stbd shaft packing nut is worn out. The shaft is 1 1/4" . I bought a Buck Algonquin complete packing box with packing nut & hose #00pb125wp I could buy the packing nut seperately #00125pbbwp it is a locking type using(cotter pins). The problem is the packing gland on the starboard shaft is threaded for left hand. The new packing box is right hand thread. Does anyone know where I can get a packing nut that is left hand thread? I would like to change just the nut. With the v-drive it looks like I would have to pull the engine to be able to replace the packing box & hose, it's really a tight fit under the engine. Has anyone changed the packing box, any suggestions?

Re: shaft packing

I've never changed the whole box, just the packing.
Why do you have to replace the packing nut? That's something that normally doesn't need replacing. If the flats are rounded over, just use a small pipe wrench to make adjustments.

If you do indeed have to put a new one on, then yes- you'll have to pull the engine or the shaft. No other way. I have no clue about where to get a lefty.

Re: shaft packing

The setup is a v-drive I can only get one arm under the engine & barely reach the stuffing box. The packing gland was worn out from shaft runout at the coupling due to previous owner hammering the coupling onto the shaft. The shoulder on the packing gland is worn quite a bit. Shaft runout looks OK now that I machined the face of the coupling. I also changed the cutlass bearing. The packing gland is left hand threaded & locks with two cotter pins instead of a lock nut.
