While fishing just offshore at Cape Caneveral this morning we ran into a school of small blacktip sharks. After landing 7 or 8 small blacktips 2' to 4' I put a large mullet on a penn 4/0 in hopes of getting a little bigger shark. I put the mullet in the water and started letting out line. My bait wasn't 15 feet from the boat when a small 3 footer hit. He was over matched and in about 15 seconds I had him along side the boat. As he approached the boat he took one flying leap and landed in the back of my 19 foot Welcraft. Lesson learned, do not bring a shark that is still green to the boat.

Mind telling us how you got the shark out of the boat?
Did you hit him on the head and kill him? Use a gaffer? Pick him back up and throw him in?

Well he was only 3 ft and probably 10 to 15 lbs. He was on the end of a penn 4/0 with 60 lb test. It was just a case of lifting him back over the side. Still kind of a shock to have one jump in the boat. I've seen 6' 70lb blacktips jump before. Would hate to see one of them in the boat.

Australian folklore has it that the word "SHARK" was invented by a drunken Aussie mariner ...set adrift in a small lifeboat.... upon the shock of sighting this ferocious grey beast beneath the surface  the Aussie (known for his advanced linguistic ability) let out a cry ...which was in fact a combination of two swear words..."SH..ARK!!"

:D

Bowfin - In hindsight, I think the story really needs to be told in an Aussie accent (like the way I heard it recently in Queensland). In Aussie twang, the common swear word that normally rhymes with "truck" is pronounced more like rhyming with "shark"...

GatorMike's title for this thread took on a new meaning for me after hearing that story. :D

GatorMike - I had a similar thing happen with a large stingray once ...quite scary.

about twenty years ago I read an article in a yachting magazine a sailboat in the bahamas turned up missing after the oweners went to shore for dinner so next day the rented an airplane and did a search they found the boat about twenty miles away being towed by a giant ray that had fouled the anchor line.
