Shattered windshield

My boat is stored at a marina facility each year, they service and shrink wrap for winter then prep it for launch each spring. 2 weeks ago they started to prep it for collection by myself and on cutting the shrink wrap off they discovered the windshield shattered, no explanation for it, no damage to boat or wrap, no marks or anything to indicate it was hit by anything. Can the cold do this? and if so how common is it? can it be prevented?

Re: Shattered windshield

Cold can shatter some types of glass but not the type of glass used in boat windshields I do not think.. It would be an imperfection and the glass would need to get warm from very cold in a fairly short period. I would guess the wrappers may have broke it and just covered it up so they kept their job

Re: Shattered windshield

Your thoughts run similar to mine, thousands of boats are stored every year in all sorts of places and I've never heard of this kind of thing happening to them, my best guess is that the guilty party just kept it quiet and walked away. The marina in question has given me no hassle, the damage is being taken care of at no cost to myself I just wondered if this was something that could happen and if something could be done to safeguard it.

Thanks for the link Slip Away, interesting. My boat is insured but no need to claim, as I said the marina is excellent, (that's why they have my boat), and they are taking care of it.
