Got her started! But still gotta few questions.

There is a little lever by the larger REV-N-FWD lever.(The Larger one appears to be the throttle)

The little lever says START at the top and RUN at the bottom.

I push the little lever to START and turn the key while the big lever is in "N" and it fires up. I wait about a minute and move the little lever to RUN and the motor dies.

However, If I do the same steps but push the larger lever towards FWD a little so it runs faster then move the little lever to run it will stay running, but when I move the large lever back to "N" while the little lever is still on RUN the motor dies.

What could be wrong?

And yes..I used my muffs while running it! o:)

Thanks!
Carl

IM not sure without seeing it but I assume the start/run lever is the choke (choke in start and run after it starts) ..You don't need to put in gear without a load on the prop(IN WATER OR TANK) even with muffs. The big lever is also the throttle and gear shifter... you move it in forward that engages the forward gear and as you push further the faster it goes the same as reverse. But Like I said I need to see it to make sure.

The small lever is the "fast idle" lever. It is used while starting to keep the idle speed higher until the engine is warm. Sounds like you need to adjust the idle stop screw on the engine. When using muffs for cooling you should set the idle speed to around 1100 rpm. The engine will idle slower once it is in the water due to the back pressure on the exhaust while under water. In the water it should idle around 750 rpm.

Thanks for the offer! But I'm either going to get this thing running on the chaep or just buy a "new to me" motor that runs :)

A local guy has a 40 HP rude that runs great he wants to sell me for $450. I'm looking at that hard if I don't get this thing running well in the next month or so. (the same local guy also has my exact motor (not running) he's parting out should I need anything)

And Tom Skully, I adjusted that screw like you told me and I was able to flip the lever to RUN without it dieing..well before my current problem with the sputtering.

Thanks!
Carl

Hmm... if the 40 is in as good shape as said assuming its not to old, I would go for it! The hyrdaulic pumps($$$) in the LU of the hydroelec shifts can tend to loose pressure over time and tend not to shift into reverse then have problems going into neutral as the pressure drops more. Its one of my many problems with it.
