I have a 1969 Johnson 1.5 hp that i have recently been given to tune up. Have replaced the coil, points, plug wire etc and am ready to test it. However the shearpin has broken and am a few hundred miles from the nearest Johndon dealer. Is there soemnthing I can use in place of this just to test start it until i order a new pin, (will test it in a drum). Is the pin necessary just to fire it up?

Thanks gang

Re: shearpin

A soft steel nail of the right diameter will work.
An aluminum nail is even safer, but may break too often.

Re: shearpin

Hi sharkman.
Any pin that fits and does not rust will do the job. If you use aluminium take a few spare with you as you may find they shear easily. I use a stainless pin in my 3hp, I have only hit the prop one time and the pin sheared with no damage to the prop.

Re: shearpin

Go to your local hardware store and by a package of bronze brazing rods of the desired diameter. Cut shear pins to desired length.

Re: shearpin

Thanks gang. I now have another slight problem. After replacing most ignition parts I find that I can't get this little beast to turn over. have spark....and have fuel to carburator but not to cylinder. Put a teaspoon of fuel in cylinder and it turned over briefly. Time to rebuild carb or is there a slightly less technical answer to this?

great site here
