Well guys, thanks for the help with the screw stuck beside the porp shaft. As several have noted the impact screw driver is a awsome tool! You would really be suprised at how fast it'll twist the head right off of that stubburn screw that's been causing you all that greif! <br /><br />Now the only problem is that the screw is now,,,,,,,,,,,,,well, um,,,,,,,,,,,,,, broken! I smacked the impact about 3 times and that was it. Looking at the screw shaft there is a spot just under the head that almost looks like the screw was corroded so baddly that it just popped. Now for the new problem at hand, the screw left in the hole. The screw shaft is so corroded that the cover plate behind the prop (the one I was removing the screw to get off) will still not budge. As the screw has corroded up the hole and will not break loose. Any suggestions? <br /><br />Here is what I was thinking, maybe drill and tap the existing hole for a new screw? Will I hurt anything by trying to pry off the plate? (I don't like this idea as I'm affraid that the cover plate might bend in the process) <br /><br />Thanks again for the help,<br />Lost

Hi Lost<br />Well it sounds like you are learning about outboards. Defenatly do not pry on that cover. When working on these things you sort of have to love them apart. Did you warm up the area before you gave it the impact. Probably wouldn't have helped in this case. But it will now. With a propane torch gently heat the cover around the snaped off screw. Gently tap cover with a rawhide mallet or equivlent. Soak with WD40. Repete process until victory is acheved. Grab onto what is left of the screw with good vice-grips and remove. It should turn right out. If not heat,tap and soak. If your going to get serious about this outboard thing you will need a drill press, good drill bits,good tap&die sets, easy outs,propane torch and anything else that can help remove and repair stuck and broken screws and bolts. Good luck I can't wait to help you with your next challenge. Prying anywhere on an outboard usually spells disaster.

Definatley need a tap and die set and a good set of easy outs that include left-handed bits.<br /><br />I bought a heck of a nice bluepoint set of these that I still use from time to time.Usually the left-handed bits bite down and turn out the screws themselves.

Do you have an ingraving tool? I know this sounds whacky.But hey, it is an outboard, as Alcan would say.<br />If you have one of those electric engraving tools, you can soak-down the bolt shaft, and pretend to 'engrave' the center of the bolt shaft with it. THe vibration will break the corosion loose. I have used mine, and yes, the wife was beginning to wonder about my sanity, on a Merc 115HP flywheel with a flywheel puller under tension, and lots of wd40.

Lost,<br />If you have to drill out the the screw and retap. Drill it out and tap it for a helicoil insert. You will not be able to tap it just for a screw as you will never match the existing threads and will end up just ripping out the threads you make when you install the new bolt. Helicoils are a larger outside diameter so you will have new and stronger threads. Helicoil taps and inserts are available at your local Auto Parts store.

VICTORY!!!!!! <br /><br />The cover is off. Finally last night at about 1:35am I got it off. I hate to say it, but I kind of pried it off. Well, let me explain. There was enough room in a gap on one side of the plate to just slip in my screw driver between the plate and the prop gear box. I rocked the screw driver and the plate budged a little bit, I then moved to the other side of the plate, and back and forth several times, and VIOLA! The plate was actually stuck by the corrosian around the screw shaft. Once the plate was off I was able to remove what was left of the screw almost by hand! Now I have what I think is the impeller? <br /><br />

<br /><br />Any guideance here would greatly help, as I don't have a manual "yet". The impeller (if that is what this is) seems to be in good shape, and doesn't look to me like it has a lot of wear? However it would not have pumped any water, becuase the water inlet leaving the impeller housing is crammed full of all kinds of crud! If my thinking is correct, the water is pumped up out of the impeller housing to the inlet leaving the housing, up to the motor, then back out the exhaust just above the prop? <br /><br />Well I suppose that is all I have for the moment at hand, I'm sure I'll have more before the day is up. All right!! victory on the broken screw, you must be charmed or just in good graces with Poseidon. I have forgotten what motor you have, but that is an old-style wobbler impeller. If the rubber isn't brittle and really corroded, it might still be usable as a back up. You can find a new one on the links page at www.aomci.org or ollie's board at www.pfs-ware.com.<br />Now you start the fun part, cleaning and flushing the corrosion out of the water lines/jackets...cause you found corrosion in there. Go easy on the other bolts/screws you'll find, cause they'll be corroded, too. I would clean the water passages by the impeller/pump and force some water up in there. If you're lucky, that's the only corroded spot and the water will flow through the other passages and out the exhaust port or tellttale hole on the leg. good luck. Post some more pix.

Hi lost<br />Don't disassemble anything unless you have to, in other words if it ain,t broke don't fixit. Just blow out the water tube and your good to go. that impeller is fine,reinstall it. Reassemble all screws,prop with anti corrosion greese, a lil dabble do ya. If this motor starts and idles well, and stays reasonably cool there is no need to mess with anything. Change the gear oil and go. I can't even begin to guess how many of these T motors I have had over the years (a lot). I have one on the rack right now. Usually when someone asks about it, I will put it in the tank and let it run at slow idle until it runs out of fuel. The guys are usually way gone by the time this happens. This is the best way I have found to get rid of these motors.

Thanks guys! It's good to hear that you have had good success with these motors alcan. I can't wait to get it in the water. I was hoping that the impeller would still work. I picked up new plugs today for the motor. I'm going to clear out the inlet tube as best as possiable tonight, and see what I get. After that hopefully it'll just amount to cleaning out the gas tank, and reassembling the thing and away we go? <br /><br />Again Thanks,<br />Lost
