I have a 86 wellcraft scarab one with a 355 chevy The boat has been well taken care of motor had a high performance rebuild and is has a mercruiser factory lower unit with the pointed nose cone and low water intakes instead of on the sides like usual. I had a llittle trouble with forward this year it was revving a little before going into gear so I asked a mechanic how to adjust and he explained. I did what i thought was right tried it then i had no forward so i just adjusted the lower cable till it shifted good both ways...Now is this method going to hurt anything??? My other question not sure if its related but I just noticed that I can pull the prop and shaft in and out about 1/8 to 3/16 " and when I spin the prop in reverse (boat out of water ) I hear a noise inside the lower unit like a clicking i guess is this normal? I just dropped the oil no water and just usual little bit of fine metal on magnet. I have a service manual but it does not show my particular shifter controls and how to adjust (commander remote controls ).Another thing I have noticed is that I remember him telling me the prop should lock in forward and reverse when doin the adjusting and now it dolesnt lock in reverse. P.s the boat shifts fine on the water . any help will be appreciated =)

Clicking is normal and yes some play is normal . So you adjusted the lower cable and all works fine now ?
Was the boat shifting fine last year ?
Just started this year ?
If so I would suspect your lower shift cable is on its way out.

Re: Shift adjustment and Prop shaft play

well i didn't adjust it by the manual because my manual is too old and doesn't have my controls , yes last year it kinda rev'd a little before gear .all i did this year was adjust lower cable at docks until it shifted good both ways.... like i said i noticed that now it doesn't lock the prop up in reverse out of water when i put it in reverse and spin prop by hand. i'm just wondering if i should adjust the way you manual says online here or if i can just go with where i put it and it shifts good?

Ayuh,... If it's workin' Properly, In the water,....
I guess I'd wait til I was replacing the Lower cable to do it By the Book...

Btw,... It don't matter what your Controller is,.... The Manual only covers adjusting the Lower Cable...
The cable to the helm shouldn't need any adjusting, Normally...
