well I was reading of another boater who was having the same problem getting his cables to adjust.I too had done the same bellows and shift cable replace.I also peplaced the water pump and shift bushing in lower unit.
' KGHOST"gave instructions on adjusting the cables, and mentioned placing shifter in forward detent (no further) to adjust then reverse detent ect. I'm thinking that's where I may have gone wrong as I was going to WOT in forward and reverse to make adjustments to cable's...As my luck would have it the starter was going south as I was going to retry these new adjustment's(bendix and full of gray sludge) so i'm waiting on a new starter...Just want to thank kghost for his instructions. That part about being in detent must have sliped by me.Good place to learn and get help. Thanks all

Re: shift adjustment problems

What drive and year. Serial number would be better if you aren't sure.

Are you sure you were using the correct procedure for your drive?

Re: shift adjustment problems

Hi Don,I'm not sure of anything anymore. Thought I did everything by the book up til now though. My out drive is a strendrive engineneering SE116 upper unit mated to a Alpha1 Gen2 lower.Cant make out the serial number, but it's off a 93 model Crest Savannah pontoon witch i'm restoring as best I can. This is for a 3.0LX 135hp engine and is 1.98 gearing ...When I started the adjust,I was adjusting the lower drive cable with the shifter in WOT forward gear(prop locked counterclockwise..Adjusted lower cableto 6" center to center...Then shifted it to WOT reverse to do shifter cable...Adjusted it to fit perfectly at both ends, and added four more turns toward transom and attached it..Forward seemed to work good but wouldn't go into reverse, and I noticed shifter seemed to be in netural when in fowardg gear...Loosened the stud on lower shift cable and tried moving it to gain reverse with no luck.Shifter was in forward WOT when old upper was removed and replaced..Also lower was in forward gear while replacing waterpump and shift assembly..Shaft and bushing looked good and tight in bellhousing, and shift shaft and shoe in bellhousing interlocked fine as best I can tell.A u-tube video was really helpful but didn't mention just having shifter in detent when adjusting cables,so I'm thinking that theres where I may have went wrong..Think of anything I missed? Oh, that SE116 is a clone of the mercruiser and came of a boat with the same engine as mine.Same gearing also_Only was in water three times bebore it was removed.(that's a story in it's self...lol) Thanks for any advise in the matter!

Re: shift adjustment problems

Oh, Forgot to mention that with lower shift cable" off bracket",and engine running I can pull/push and get both forward or reverse...not smooth with interrupter not kicking in, but it will shift both ways. If that's any help...Thanks again.

Re: shift adjustment problems

Instead of following someone else's information about how to adjust it, which may have left out a step or two, give the OEM method a try. Follow the procedures below, step by step (don't skip any) and see if it works.

Re: shift adjustment problems

Thanks Don,Tried it that way and it seems to shift to both forward and reverse and lock in. Did notice though that when in gear, when I rotate prop the other way theirs a klunk kind of sound and not a ticking sound. Also you can feel it in the prop when it klunks. Closest I've been to right so far! Can't wait for the starter to come in to try it on the hose..If that goes ok, it's off to a lake to fine tune it if needed..Thanks so much for being out there for us want to be shade tree's.Learning so much from you guy's...

Absolutely normal, that's what all dog clutch drives do.
