I have a 1994 volvo penta 5.7 gl pmda and a dp c1 out drive. The shifting is terrible. trying to come in and out of gear is near impossible to do gently and is very dangerous when trying to dock boat in slip.

To change the cables do you have to pull the outdrive? and what cable would you recommend and control box.

Boat has to be out of water, but drive can stay on with these...I like the Teleflex Extreme cables myself...

I would also change just the cables first. Unless something is broken from forcing it, chances are very high there is nothing wrong with the control box.
I also like the extreme cables, but they don't fit in some controls. The standard cables should work great for many years if they are under 20 feet. Over that, and they don't last as long, or if they have very sharp bends.

Also slap some white grease around the inside of the control box when you are in there, wear & friction points that is.
